Great post, Meagan! My son was starting kindergarten when the travel magazine I edited started losing ad revenue and folded down. At the time, I was very conflicted over whether or not I should stay home or try to find another job that paid close to $45,000 per year. (Which is what we lost in income when the magazine folded.) I wanted to stay home -- I felt I'd miss so much already -- but wanted to keep my skills and my byline fresh. And I wanted to keep earning *some* money for the family. It wasn't easy, but I started freelancing from home and have done so ever since. I've never earned what I did when I was a full-time editor, but it wasn't just about the money. Even part-time work keeps the resume up-to-date and makes it easier to land other jobs.

Interesting interview and lots of great points. The roles and issues are reversed in our home though.

I also think that moms need to advocate for changes in the system. Amy's opening quote is right: caregiving is not optional. Yet we so devalue it in this country that if a woman takes time to raise her children, her Social Security income in her old age will be less than if she'd had a "job."

I've been a stay @ home mom for 13 yrs. Had kids fresh out of high school, I wouldn't even know where to start to get into the work force. Scary to think I couldn't get a job if/when I need to because I'm in my 30's and have never worked.
